Smile Brilliant recently got in touch to see if I’d like to try their vegan and cruelty free DIY teeth whitening kit in exchange for a review. Honestly, I was pretty nervous before hand. I’ve never whitened my teeth before, and I’ve heard so many horror stories about DIY at home teeth whitening so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had a little look into the company, and was swayed by the quality of the products and the amazing reviews that I had seen.
Smile Brilliant have designed their DIY Home Whitening Kit with dental professionals and hygienists to ensure you’re getting the best quality whitening from the comfort of your home, and you’re not wasting your time and money traipsing back and forth to the dentist.
So how does it work?
First things first, you order the ‘system’. You’re best to have a little thing about what your teeth whitening needs are before ordering. Are your teeth quite stained? Are your teeth sensitive? The beauty of the Smile Brilliant kits is that you can order different ‘system’ sets based on what you need. You can get more whitening gel, or more desensitising gel based on your own teeth.
I got the T3 sensitive system (light stains), which contained 9 applications of the teeth whitening gel and 9 applications of the desensitising gel. I opted for this one because I get some sensitivity to hot/cold food and drink, I have really only got some light stains and even though I drink coffee, I don’t smoke or drink red wine so I thought it would be the perfect fit. Smile Brilliant recommends roughly 7-14 treatments, so opting for the T3 sensitive system seemed like the perfect option.
Your first box arrives with your whitening gel, desensitising gel, dental impression trays and your catalyst and base pastes for making your dental impressions in. You also get a little instructions manual with a simple step by step guide of how to use your system. You can then ship your dental impressions back in the pre-paid envelope that (very handily) comes in your first box too. (It’s only pre-paid for the US, and costs about £10 to ship back from the UK). The dental impressions take about 10 to 15 minutes to make and once you’re done, you pop them in the envelope and you’re good to go.
Once you’ve sent your impressions back, you have to wait roughly 10 days for your custom fitted trays to be shipped back to you, if you’re in the UK. If you’re in the US, it only takes 3 to 5 days to get your trays back. That’s right, you get custom fitted trays for your teeth. That means that you’re whitening gel will spread much more evenly across your teeth when whitening. My favourite thing about the custom fitted trays has to be the fact that they are flexible, pliable and thin, making them comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.
You can whiten your teeth for anything from 45 minutes to 3 hours, so you need to be comfortable. I’ve seen so many whitening kits that come with LED lights that hang out of your mouth throughout the whitening, and get in the way whilst you’re whitening. The custom fitted trays from Smile Brilliant allow me to whiten my teeth whilst reading, blogging, cooking my dinner or watching TV on my sofa.
I started off whitening for about 45 minutes, and gradually increased it throughout the process. I didn’t particularly want to start of going for the maximum time, as I wasn’t sure of the effect it would have on my gums and whether my teeth would feel a bit sensitive when using the products. I have a bit of sensitivity in general, so obviously putting chemicals on my teeth will cause that sensitivity. So, I just made sure to use the desensitising gel before whitening.
I used 7 of the whitening treatments, and I intend to go on and use the next two applications/sessions this week!
For the price, the T3 sensitive system is definitely worth the money. It’s $149 or about £115 for the system, and if you’re in the UK you’ll have roughly £10 – £13 for custom charges/import charges for your first box. I’ve never whitened my teeth before, and for a first go I couldn’t be happier with the results. (Here’s a super zoomed in photo of my mouth…)
